The American children's television station, #Nickelodeon; known for SpongeBob Squarepants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and PAW Patrol, went off-air for the length of time that unarmed black man George Floyd was held in a brutal #chokehold. He received this all to frequent form of #PoliceBrutality by a white police officer on the streets of #Minneapolis. Floyd was killed in police custody on the 25th May 2020 which has led to powerful protests across all 50 US States, in major cities across the UK such as London, Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester, as well as across the globe.
The video that people filmed of the event have gained great support online and received hundreds of thousands of upvotes and likes in addition to thousands of supportive comments that praised the media giant to educating children.
#Nickelodeon went off-air for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, the length of time that a white police officer knelt on #GeorgeFloyd's neck in a 'chokehold' which led to Floyd being killed in police custody on the 25th of May 2020.
The children's TV channel opened with a statement saying that 'Nickelodeon is going off the air for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in support of justice, equality, and human rights'
Nickelodeon went on to inform their young audience of their rights, which they appropriately titled the 'Declaration of Kids' Rights'.
They proceeded to state that 'You have the right to be seen, heard, and respected as a citizen of the world.'
'You have the right to a world that is peaceful.'
'You have the right to be treated with equality, regardless of the color of your skin.'
'You have the right to an education that prepares you to run the world.'
'You have the right to your opinions and feelings, even if others don't agree with them.'
